Overview:
The South African bowling lineup balances experience with emerging talent. Veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj and all-rounder George Linde will lead the spin department.
New Zealand are set to take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series, with the two teams facing off for the third time in the 3rd T20I at Eden Park, Auckland, on March 20th.
The Kiwis had a shaky start, dropping the opening game to a South African side led by Keshav Maharaj. The Proteas are missing several key players. Even the Kiwis are without top players. This is not the same squad that recently fell short in the T20 World Cup final against India. Mitchell Santner is available for the first three games, offering leadership and steadying influence within the squad.
New Zealand’s opening pair failed to get off to a flying start in the first match, but Devon Conway managed to score a half-century, his first significant contribution since the India series. Conway’s performance could give the team a strong platform, while Tom Latham, returning to T20 action, will be hoping to regain his form after a couple of low scores.
The middle order remains a young and developing unit. Tim Robinson has some prior T20I experience, but most of it came under the guidance of senior players. Now, the responsibility rests on Robinson and Nick Kelly to lead the team through the critical middle overs.
This match will also be the last for Mitchell Santner before he heads to India for IPL 2026. Batting all-rounders Jimmy Neesham and Josh Clarkson are expected to take on key roles, with Neesham now emerging as one of the senior players in the squad.
On the bowling front, Kyle Jamieson has started to find form again since the India series. He will be supported by Ben Sears and Lockie Ferguson, who shared six wickets in the second game at Hamilton. Cole McConchie has been named as the second spinner following Ish Sodhi’s injury.

South Africa, in contrast, have fielded a relatively inexperienced squad, featuring several debutants. Wicketkeeper Connor Esterhuizen hasn’t been impressive with the bat but played a role in a slow chase that secured a win in the opening match. Tony de Zorzi returns to the lineup after recovering from injury.
With Jordan Hermann ruled out due to a hamstring issue, Rubin Hermann and Jason Smith are expected to stabilize South Africa’s middle order. Wiaan Mulder, though not a regular T20 player, adds versatility and depth to the side.
