After former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh also compared an Olympic medal with one of Team India’s wins in the World Cups. Bhajji stated that Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics was bigger than India’s 2011 World Cup triumph.

Neeraj Chopra held a corner of the India flag in each hand and raised it over his head.

A half-hour later, the tri-colour was flying at the top of the mast at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium and Chopra was standing atop the medal podium, feeling on top of the world.

A first gold medal in Olympic track and field for a nation of 1.3 billion, its first in any sports since a shooting title in 2008, had to be cause for celebration.

Chopra won the javelin title at the Tokyo Games with a personal-best throw of 87.58 meters on Saturday night, securing the title with a throw to spare.

Speaking to Aaj Tak, Harbhajan said: “This gold medal win is bigger than the Cricket World Cup win in 2011. This should be celebrated 50 times more than the 2011 World Cup.”

Gambhir, who had earlier compared India’s bronze medal win in men’s hockey at the Tokyo Olympics to World Cup triumphs, reacted to Harbhajan’s remark.

“True that @harbhajan_singh …But You shouldn’t have said this! You should not say this! You shall never say this,” he wrote.

Gambhir was trolled by fans for his remarks. Both Gambhir and Harbhajan were part of the World Cup-winning side.
