Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has compared the top two off-spinners in world cricket at the moment. R Ashwin and Nathan Lyon have been part of the game for a decade, with the latter touching the 400 Test wickets mark recently.
Both have been dominated in red-ball cricket over the years and have been their team’s number one spinner. Hogg stated that Lyon is more conventional while Ashwin has more variations.
“Ashwin has variation in his bowling arsenal, making him more dangerous than Nathan Lyon. He also has the cannon ball, which he uses to roll his fingers along the seam. He also has the carrom ball. This is where he flicks the seam using his middle finger. This is the one that flips the other direction. To bamboozle batsmen, he has many more options.”
The former spinner also explained the difference between the two classy bowlers. He feels that Team India uses Ashwin as a wicket-taking option while Lyon performs a more subdued role.
“Both players have slightly different roles within the team. Ashwin is more used as a wicket-taking option, while Lyon holds up one end to bowl as many as possible to give the Australian fast bowlers a break,” he added.
