The legendary MS Dhoni is known for catching fans off-guard. He did the same recently when he stepped down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings.

Irfan Pathan has lauded MS Dhoni for allowing the Chennai Super Kings to retain Ravindra Jadeja as the team’s first retention. The defending champions have retained four players – Jadeja, Dhoni, Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad – ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.

While Jadeja would earn INR 16 crore, Dhoni has taken a pay cut, and his salary would be INR 12 crore for being the second retained player.

“It is very difficult to be practical when you are such a big player. We have seen many players putting their egos ahead. MS Dhoni kept his ego aside and said that he is not at his peak.”

The former CSK player further added that MSD deserves praise for accepting that Jadeja is a more valuable player at the moment.

“There is a guy here [Jadeja] who has performed very well and won matches, his potential has become fantastic both with the bat and ball, give him the No. 1 and I will come at No. 2. This is praiseworthy, you will always praise MS Dhoni off the field in this context.”

The CSK captain scored just 114 runs in IPL 2021 at a below-par average of 16.28.
