India defeated Sri Lanka in the finale of the ICC World Cup in 2011. MS Dhoni, the skipper of the team, scored an unbeaten 91 to guide India to second World Cup title.
MSD promoted himself in the batting order ahead of Yuvraj Singh, who was the best performer in the tournament.
When Dhoni walked in to bat ahead of Yuvraj Singh, the fans were shocked as he hasn’t scored a fifty in the event. However, India’s then mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton has opened up on the decision and backed Dhoni, considering his habit of tackling pressure situations well.
“MS Dhoni knows how to win games in the second innings. Yuvraj had already done a lot in the tournament and he was done and spent. The situation was tailor made for someone like Dhoni, who is a genuine “massive high-pressure” player.. Yuvraj is not one of those, Dhoni is,” wrote Paddy Upton in his column for Indian Express.
Gautam Gambhir also scored 97 in the most important game for the home team.
