Punjab Kings haven’t announced the name of their captain for IPL 2022. Many believed he would lead the team when the franchise retained Mayank Agarwal before the mega auction. However, after the Punjab based franchise bought Shikhar Dhawan, there have been reports he might captain the team in the 15th season of the tournament.
Mohit Burman, the co-owner of the Kings, has dropped a hint. But, if his recent interview is to believe, Agarwal is likely to pip Dhawan.
“I think it’s a big advantage to have a senior player who has played with you before to lead the team. He understands the thinking of the coach,” said Burman to News9 Sports.
Mayank joined the franchise in 2018 and has since been an important part of the batting unit. Over the last few seasons, his opening partnership with a former franchise player, KL Rahul, won several games for the side. He had also led the squad for one of the games in IPL 2021 in the absence of KL.
“He has a good rapport with the coaches, and the idea is to give him a strong bunch of players who fill up all the positions,” he added.
Punjab won a successful bid to but Dhawan for INR 8.25 crore. “Our strategy was to but top performers in every position so it would be easy for the captain to not only lead but be a team player. Therefore, I wanted to have a strong team instead of having one strong leader,” said Burman on the squad.
Their most expensive buy was Liam Livingstone, for whom they shelled out INR 11.5 crore. They also purchased Kagiso Rabada for INR 9.25 crore.
