Marizanne Kapp has endorsed Jemimah Rodrigues to succeed Harmanpreet Kaur as the next captain of India. Jemimah was appointed skipper of Delhi Capitals (DC) for the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL), succeeding Meg Lanning, who now captains the UP Warriorz.

While Jemimah has led from the front in Mumbai’s domestic setup, she has no experience of leading a side at a national or WPL leadership level. Kapp highlighted her calm head and natural authority, noting that guidance from teammates would allow her leadership to blossom.

“I mentioned a few seasons back that Jemimah could be India’s future captain. Leadership comes naturally to her. The way she connects with teammates, unites the group and shows empathy is hugely important. Even the most seasoned skippers are tested at times. With senior heads around her, I believe she’ll embrace the responsibility,” Kapp told Cricbuzz.

Jemimah’s rewards followed a memorable World Cup campaign where she played a pivotal role in India’s championship triumph. She produced her career-best innings in the semi-final, registering a maiden hundred that derailed Australia’s momentum. After a stuttering start that included two ducks versus Sri Lanka and South Africa, she emphatically rediscovered her rhythm.

According to Kapp, parting ways with Meg Lanning as captain left a significant void at DC. Lanning had consistently led the Capitals to the league final across all three WPL campaigns. Her résumé includes five World Cup triumphs as a leader, along with a place among the top three scorers in WPL.

“Meg stepping away from the leadership role is a massive loss. Her track record as a captain speaks for itself, not just at DC but across the globe,” Kapp added.

The Capitals open their season with a high-profile clash against two-time title holders Mumbai Indians on January 10, with Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil hosting the contest.
