Manoj Tiwary suggested that India’s prospects of winning the title would have been stronger under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has expressed concern over the move to strip Rohit Sharma of the ODI captaincy, suggesting the leadership at the Board of Control for Cricket in India, including Jay Shah, could have stepped in to prevent the decision. Tiwary believes Rohit remains India’s strongest option to steer the side towards success at the 2027 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma’s stint as India’s ODI captain ended less than six months after he guided the side to Champions Trophy success. The leadership responsibility has since shifted to Shubman Gill, with the Gujarat Titans skipper now leading the ODI side.
“Rohit Sharma was a players’ captain. He delivered a Champions Trophy title, and you can see from the visuals how comfortably the younger players relate to him. He leads the team, and in many ways, is the country’s captain,” Manoj Tiwary told Sports Tak.
“I had said it back then as well. The BCCI’s senior leadership, including Jay Shah, who later moved to the ICC, should have stepped in. Those in charge should have intervened to prevent the decision,” he added.
While expressing confidence in Shubman Gill for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe, Manoj Tiwary suggested that India’s prospects of winning the title would have been stronger under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
“If things go Shubman Gill’s way, India can certainly win. There’s no question about it. But when I weigh the odds and ask which captain gives us a better chance of lifting the World Cup, I see it as around 60 percent with Shubman. Under Rohit’s leadership, that probability rises to about 85 percent,” Tiwary concluded.
