Sanjay Manjrekar believes Virat Kohli was a very good captain, but he doesn’t rate 33-year old as highly as some former India skippers. Virat left the Test captaincy after failing to lead the team to victory in South Africa. He quit the T20I captaincy earlier last year and was later sacked from a leadership role in one-day internationals.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Manjrekar said that he likes Virat’s never say die attitude, but he has failed in ICC events.
‘When you look at Virat, there are many things that please you, but when you talk about Indian greats, Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar were better than him. Dhoni won everything for the country. Kapil took us to World Cup triumph when there was an inferiority complex at the world level. Sourav Ganguly regrouped the Indian cricket after the match-fixing saga. Sunil Gavaskar was also good. You live in a time when you have a lot of platforms. But Indian cricket didn’t start 10 years back. These are guys that I believe have been better leaders than Virat, who has been good in own right,” he said.
