India have been ordinary in Test cricket since Gautam Gambhir became head coach following the departure of Rahul Dravid. Virat Kohli’s brother, Vikas, took a dig at head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel, blaming them for the team’s decline in the longest format of the game. He deleted the post after a while, but it showed growing frustration among the fans of the Indian cricket team.

India didn’t lose a single Test series at home between December 2012 and October 2024. The team under Kohli’s leadership dominated the rivals before Rohit Sharma became the Test captain in 2022. Virat’s team also won two consecutive Border-Gavaskar series in Australia.

Vikas highlighted the difference between the two eras, noting that the Indian team was once aiming to win in overseas conditions but is now struggling to win home games. He also slammed the BCCI, calling the downfall a result of the changes to the side.

“There was a time that we played to win even in overseas conditions…. Now we are playing to save the match….even in India. This is what happens when u try to boss around and change things unnecessarily, which were not broken….,” Vikas wrote, which he later deleted.

In another post, he alleged that Rohit and Virat were removed from Test cricket.

“So let’s break it down: Team India strategy: remove senior, experienced players. Remove proper 3/4/5 batmen. Play bowler at no 3. Use allrounders.

“SOUTH AFRICA STRATEGY: Play proper test match team: Specialist openers, Specialist no 3/4/5/6 batters, Specialist spinners, Specialist fast bowlers, and maybe 1 all-rounder…

“Though I really want team India to win but questions needs to be asked now… WHO IS RESPONSIBLE???”

After losing to New Zealand 3-0, India are now on the verge of a second home Test series whitewash. South Africa have taken a 1-0 lead following a 30-run win in the Kolkata Test and are now on the verge of securing a victory in the second Test in Guwahati. Gambhir’s tenure started with a 2-0 Test series win over Bangladesh. The Kiwis then won all three Tests against the Rohit Sharma-led unit.

The sub-continental nation lost the recent edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a margin of 1-3. In the red-ball format against the West Indies, the host nation won both Tests. The Proteas have now put India on the back foot.
