In a recent statement, R Ashwin emphasized that KL Rahul’s expertise has seamlessly filled the void created by the retirements of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh.
Ashwin confidently suggests that Rahul should secure the number five spot in the Indian cricket lineup during the Asia Cup 2023.
KL Rahul’s remarkable performance at the No.5 position for India substantiates Ashwin’s endorsement. With an impressive record of 742 runs from 18 ODIs at an average exceeding 50, Rahul has showcased his versatility and competence as a cricketer.
Despite contending with a minor injury, he underwent extensive rehabilitation to ensure his readiness for the forthcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. This dedication earned Rahul a well-deserved spot in the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup.
Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel highlighted the prolonged search for a competent middle-order batter in the Indian team.
He said, “India has been desperate for a replacement for Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni since their retirements.” Rahul has filled that position with expertise. “He is our wicketkeeper-batsman and a definite lock at No. 5.”
Despite the lingering niggle, Ashwin remains hopeful that Rahul will be ready for the first game of the tournament.
“Before Pant’s injury, Rahul was second in line. Now that Ishan Kishan is the second keeper, he has seized the opportunity. Rahul has a niggle, but he should be fine for the first game. If he is not present, we have an 18-member squad travelling with Sanju Samson,” he concluded.
