Jos Buttler remains optimistic that England’s T20 World Cup semi-final loss to India won’t signal the end of his international career, though he admits there’s no certainty of being picked for the upcoming white-ball series in July.
Jos Buttler struggled at the World Cup, accumulating just 87 runs in eight innings and managing only a single half-century across his last four ICC events. Still, with 18 months left on his ECB central contract, he remains hopeful of being selected for England’s upcoming home summer, which features five T20Is and three ODIs against India.
“I hope so, though I’m not sure. Clearly, I had a disappointing tournament, which was frustrating, but over the past few years, I’ve been playing some of the best cricket of my career, so I’m hopeful I can return to that form. I definitely want to continue representing England, but I’m no longer captain, nor a selector, so things will take their course. We’ll just have to see,” Buttler said on his podcast, For the Love of Cricket.
Buttler admitted he needed a short break from the game and spent a week in the mountains of France with his family. He will travel to India on Saturday to start training with the Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL season.
“At that moment, I was completely detached from cricket, and honestly, it was exactly what I needed. The tournament didn’t go as I would have hoped personally, and I felt I needed some time away from the game to clear my mind. That week, I couldn’t have been any further from cricket,” he added.
“It was really refreshing I thoroughly enjoyed it, a proper sense of release. Slowly, as this week began, I started reflecting on what truly matters to me and my cricket, and why things didn’t go exactly as I had hoped. There are aspects of what went wrong that I can’t fully explain. No matter how much effort and intent you put in, sometimes things just don’t work out, and that’s okay. It wasn’t due to a lack of trying; it simply didn’t click,” he concluded.
