Overview:
Despite being runners-up in last year’s T20 World Cup, South Africa have struggled in bilateral T20I series, suffering losses to India, Australia, West Indies, and Pakistan.
South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram spoke to the media on the eve of the first T20I in Cuttack. He acknowledged that the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli brings some relief to his side, but reiterated that India continue to be a strong team in the shortest format.
Before the first match at the Barabati Stadium, Markram shared that the Proteas have arrived with “fresh strategies” for the T20I format, which, in his view, demands a distinct mindset compared to their recent Test series victory.
“It’s good that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not in the T20I side, but it’s still a strong Indian team, We don’t have any specific plans. It’s T20 cricket, an exciting format, and that’s the style we want to play. We want the players to express themselves, enjoy the game, and showcase their best skills,” Markram said.
Despite being runners-up in last year’s T20 World Cup, South Africa have struggled in bilateral T20I series, suffering losses to India, Australia, West Indies, and Pakistan. However, Markram emphasized that their approach remains consistent.
“It marks the beginning of a new series. We haven’t finalised the playing XI, and we need a few more discussions before making that decision.”
South Africa boast a perfect record at this ground, winning both of their previous matches in Cuttack. Markram believes that this history could provide some players with a sense of comfort and help them settle in faster.
“Players who have had success here in the past can draw confidence from that experience.”
A key boost for the visitors is the return of Anrich Nortje, making his first appearance since the T20 World Cup final. “It’s great to have him back. Whenever a bowler can bowl as fast as he does, it’s a boost to any team,” Markram mentioned.
Injuries have created opportunities for young fast bowlers, and the captain sees this as a chance, not a setback. “Our fast-bowling depth is increasing. The players will be eager, and I’m confident they’ll give their all.”
Markram expects good batting wickets and high scores but highlighted the importance of adjusting swiftly to the conditions.
“You expect the pitches to be favorable and the games to be high-scoring. If not, we’ll adjust during the game. We hope to begin on a positive note,” he concluded.
