Following the hosts' victory against Sri Lanka, captain Rohit Sharma labeled Ashwin an "all-time great."

Team India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first Test of the series in Mohali.

During the same, India’s leading off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin went past Kapil Dev’s overall wicket tally (434) in Test cricket to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Whites.

Only Anil Kumble (619 wickets) is ahead of the 35-year old spinner. Following the hosts’ victory against Sri Lanka, captain Rohit Sharma labeled Ashwin an “all-time great.”

“He is an all-time great in my eyes. Ashwin has given so many match-winning performances. He has performed well for the country. People might differ from my point of view, but from where I see, he is an all-time great,” Rohit had said.

However, former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Rashid Latif said while Ashwin has been good in home conditions, India have produced better bowlers than him.

“Ashwin is a great bowler. He is the best spinner in India. However, I’m afraid I disagree with Rohit’s statement considering Ashwin’s performance in away matches. Kumble was excellent. Even Jadeja has been phenomenal. Bishan Singh Bedi was brilliant in the past,” Latif said on his official YouTube channel.

“I think Rohit’s statement was a slip of the tongue. It is a way of motivating players,” he added.
