Ex-Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to give more ODI matches to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This step will ensure that fans continue to witness Rohit and Kohli‘s brilliance. With both having bid farewell to T20Is in 2024 and Tests in 2025, Pathan feels their recent performances have reignited excitement for the 50-over format.
Pathan expressed his doubts about the current schedule, asking why ODI series are restricted to three matches instead of five and why there aren’t triangular or quadrangular tournaments. He emphasized that, with Rohit and Kohli now playing only one format, the BCCI has the flexibility to organize more ODIs, allowing fans to watch the legendary pair in action for a longer time.
“I keep saying this for a reason. Why not have five ODIs instead of just three? Why can’t we organize triangular or quadrangular series? Given that these two legends play only one format, it makes sense to explore such options. It’s fair to say that if there’s renewed interest in ODI cricket, it’s largely thanks to these two,” Pathan stated on Star Sports.
Kohli and Sharma have been in sensational form in international cricket, showing no signs of slowing down despite playing in the ODI format. Their impressive displays in recent series against Australia and South Africa have reaffirmed their relevance, making it clear to selectors and team management that they are strong contenders for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“The most important thing is that they are still delivering great performances. The World Cup is still away, and while it’s something to consider, I believe the more we see of them, the better it is. These two should keep playing, representing India, and even when they’re not with the national team, they should continue playing domestic cricket. The more they play, the better it is for everyone,” Pathan remarked.
Reports suggested that the Indian cricket board will reveal the 15-player squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand on Saturday, January 3. The series will start with the first match in Vadodara on January 11, followed by the second ODI in Rajkot on January 14. The concluding match is scheduled for January 18 at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.
