Former India fast bowler Irfan Pathan lauded the left-arm quick for keeping big guns like MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya silent

The Indian government has renamed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The decision was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award! Jai Hind!,” he wrote.

The decision has got the backing of former India player Irfan Pathan. According to him, it’s the right move by the government.

“Absolutely welcome this move. Sportsman getting recognition and award being named after him or her. Hopefully, the start of many such things in sports  #DhyanChandAward #dhyanchand ji,” he wrote.

He further added that future stadiums should be named after sportsmen.

“Hopefully in the future sports stadium names will be after sportsmen too.”

Major Dhyan Chand was the best hockey player in his heydays. He represented India in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics, where India won the gold medal. The magician of hockey stick scored 400 goals in international hockey.
