India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel believes that, as long as they are fit and performing well, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should definitely be part of the 2027 World Cup squad.
Having competed against both white-ball stars himself, Morkel believes their proven ability and experience would be a major asset to the team and a constant challenge for opposition bowlers.
While addressing reporters in Ranchi ahead of the first ODI against South Africa, Morkel stressed that no one can match the level of experience Kohli and Rohit contribute to the ODI squad.
“Absolutely, they are quality players,” Morkel said when questioned about whether he supports the idea of including Rohit and Virat in the 2027 World Cup squad.
“As long as they’re willing to put in the hard work and stay fit, there’s no replacing the kind of experience they bring. You can’t find that anywhere else. They’ve won trophies and understand how to handle major tournaments. If they keep themselves in shape and feel physically capable, then absolutely—they should be there. The World Cup is still far away, but definitely yes.”
Reflecting on his battles with Rohit and Kohli, Morkel shared how challenging it was to bowl to two of the top ODI batters. He confessed that their presence often made preparation intense, which is why he strongly believes they should be part of India’s 2027 World Cup squad.
“I’ve faced them plenty of times, and they’ve given me many sleepless nights. As a bowler, I know exactly what it takes to prepare for players of their calibre. That’s why I completely support the idea,” he concluded.
