Indian Premier League (IPL) defending champions Chennai Super Kings look sorted after getting what they desired for in the 2022 mega auction recently. CSK have a solid squad going with the kind of direction they always seek. CSK are a side that always blends with experience, and they have got back the core of players that made them so successful over the years. The side will once again be led by MS Dhoni, who will be aiming to level the number of trophies won by the Mumbai Indians (5).

CSK got a like-a-like replacement for Faf du Plessis in the opening department in the form of Devon Conway. They got hold of players that were released in the form of Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, and Mitchell Santner. They also spent a whopping sum to get back pacer Deepak Chahar which was a sound move given his new-ball exploits. CSK not only have the desired XI in place, but the bench strength is visible as well.

CSK will go into the tournament as one of the favourites, and they will be keen to make a sound impact under MS Dhoni.

The players CSK had retained

With the IPL set to be a 10-team affair, the existing teams had an opportunity to retain at least four players ahead of the auction. The Super Kings retained Ravindra Jadeja for Rs 16 crore, MS Dhoni for Rs 12 crore, Moeen Ali for Rs 8 crore and Ruturaj Gaikwad for Rs 6 crore.

What can be CSK’s playing XI?

1) Ruturaj Gaikwad: This man is a special player and deserves all the plaudits for playing fearless cricket. A complete batsman, Ruturaj has the knack of settling in and playing at a fine tempo. He won the Orange Cap in IPL 2021, amassing 635 runs at 45.35.

2) Devon Conway: The New Zealander is someone who can be a perfect replacement for Faf du Plessis. Conway has already made a great start to his international career. He is also a celebrated T20 cricketer, scoring an impressive 3,765 runs at 43.77. He has two tons and 28 fifties.

3) Moeen Ali: The Englishman is set to come in at number three, something he did last season. Moeen impressed largely for CSK with his quick scores and efficiency with the ball when required. He brings immense value as a cricketer. He amassed 357 runs, besides taking six wickets last season.

4) Ambati Rayudu: The veteran CSK stalwart can come in at number four to bring in the desired stability. Rayudu has all the shots in his textbook, and he is someone who can chip in with consistent scores. He amassed 257 runs last season, and overall he has scored 3,916 runs.

5) MS Dhoni: The champion performer may have dwindled with the bat, however, he remains an elegant customer behind the stumps. His captaincy skills can make a difference as well. The last two seasons saw MSD struggle with the bat, but he will look to overcome the shortcomings.

6) Ravindra Jadeja: The spin all-rounder was rightly retained by the Super Kings. Jadeja is a sheer match-winner, and his temperament is massive. A quality player across all departments, Jaddu has 2,386 runs and 127 IPL wickets. He can be the perfect match-winner.

7) Shivam Dube: CSK can turn upto Dube as the third all-rounder in the side. Dube has big-hitting skills and can be a crucial customer with the ball as well in the middle overs. He has scored 399 runs in the IPL at 22.16. He has also claimed four wickets.

8) Deepak Chahar: The Indian pacer can be influential for CSK with the new ball as he has done so often. Chahar can get his side the desired wickets upfront, besides chipping in with some cameos as well. In the IPL, Chahar has taken 59 wickets from 63 matches to date.

9) Dwaine Pretorius: The South African cricketer is a highly experienced figure in T20 cricket, and CSK have found another all-rounder who can make the difference. In T20s, Pretorius has taken 109 wickets at 26.55. He has also scored 2,061 runs with the bat.

10) Prashant Solanki: The 22-year-old spinner can support Jadeja and Moeen to bolster CSK’s spin department. Solanki has played nine List A matches in his short career, taking a total of 21 scalps at 23.00. In one T20 match, he has figures worth 1/26 from four overs.

11) Adam Milne: In nine IPL games across three seasons, Milne has seven wickets under his belt. He hasn’t got the desired game time for the previous sides he played for. However, this season could be immense for the talented cricketer, who has 151 wickets in T20s overall at 24.13.
