Former off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has lauded the Indian women’s cricket team for remembering former players after winning the World Cup.

Ashwin said he found the moment good when the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team celebrated their success with legends Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra and Jhulan Goswami at the DY Patil Stadium.

“I want to take my hat out to the women’s team. The Indian men’s team has never done something like this. We have said it in front of the media, but I haven’t seen the players giving credit to the former players. They always make comparisons between their team and the past squads,” R Ashwin said.

“Anjum Chopra and Mithali Raj were there. They are the people who sprinkled the seeds and watered them. Those seeds are now the champions. I found that good,” he added.

Ashwin mentioned that the success in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup was the culmination of struggles, resilience and work done by generations of women players.

“The victory was not achieved today, and it has been a work of three decades. What about your Diana Eduljis, Sudha Shahs, Anjum Chopras and Jhulan Goswamis? Jhulan was there, and she is the Ishant Sharma or Zaheer Khan of women’s cricket.”

Ashwin also spoke against comparing men’s and women’s cricketers. For Ashwin, celebration with the legends was the most important thing.

“No one asked them to celebrate with the past cricketers, but they still remembered all of them. They were on a high after winning, but they still went to the former players,” he concluded.
