After BCCI announced the 17-member list for Asia Cup 2023, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has been at the helm of criticism for picking KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Notably, Shreyas and Rahul were stationed at the NCA for a long time because of injuries and have not played a single game in the last few months.
While Shreyas is fully fit and has even scored 199 runs in a practice game recently, Rahul has picked up a fresh niggle that would rule him out of the tournament for a few games. Several cricket pundits were astonished by this information, as they felt that the management should not go ahead with unfit players. However, in the recent events, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev spoke otherwise.

Dev remarked that the two players should be a part of the playing XI so that they get match practice before the World Cup, and in case their injuries reoccur, then the management has the time to find a replacement.
“The World Cup is so close, and you haven’t given the players a chance. What if they directly head to the World Cup and get injured? Here, if they play, then they get the chance to bat and bowl to get into the rhythm.”
“Worst case scenario is that if they get injured again, then there is no shortage of talent, and India would have a chance to make changes to the World Cup squad right away.”
