India’s women’s team secured a historic second T20I series victory over Australia women’s cricketers with a 17-run win in the third and final match on 21 February at the Adelaide Oval. The Women in Blue posted 176/6, with Smriti Mandhana (82 off 55) and Jemimah Rodrigues (59 off 46) leading the batting charge. In reply, Australia managed 159/9 in their 20 overs, with Shreyanka Patil (3/22) and Shree Charani (3/32) bowling well. India registered their second series win over the Women in Yellow.
India’s previous win against Australia was in 2016, while Australia’s last T20I series defeat on home soil came in 2017 when New Zealand thumped them. India also halted Australia’s run of seven consecutive T20I series wins.
India didn’t start well as Renuka Singh Thakur conceded 18 runs in her first over. However, spinner Shreyanka put the host nation in trouble with Australia losing three wickets for 32 runs.
Georgia Voll (10) and Beth Mooney (6) were unable to get going. Ellyse Perry managed just 1 run. Ashleigh Gardner faced 45 balls to score 57 runs, but her dismissal in the 16th over put India in firm control. Shree Charani was unplayable, and three wickets by her confirmed India’s victory.
Earlier, Shafali Verma (7) departed without making an impactful contribution. Mandhana and Rodrigues didn’t allow the Aussie bowlers to settle down and kept the scoreboard ticking. The century stand between the two players came up in just 66 deliveries. Mandhana fell in the 17th over, and the 121-run stand with Jemimah ended.
Richa Ghosh was promoted, and she struck 18 runs off 7 balls. The two nations will now compete in the three-match ODI series, which starts on 24 February.
