Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets on debut and was named the Man of the Match for his impressive bowling display. India won the match by six wickets at the famous Eden Gardens.
“Bishnoi is very talented, which is why he was selected into the team straight away. We see something different in him. He has variations and skills to trouble the batters. On the other hand, Ravi can bowl at any stage, and it gives us a lot of options to rotate the other bowlers,” said Rohit Sharma.
“Very happy with his performance in the first game for India, and he has got a bright future, and it depends on how we use him .”
Chasing 158 to win, Rohit scored 19-ball 40, but India lost a few quick wickets before Suryakumar Yadav (34 not out), and Venkatesh Iyer (24 not out) won the game for the Men in Blue.
“I should have won the game. We wanted to be a bit clinical in the end. We tried different things in the middle, but it didn’t work out. However, happy with the win, and we can take a lot of confidence.”
West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard stated that they were 18-20 runs short. “If we had scored 18-20 runs more, it would have been competitive. After six overs, India were in front, but I thought the bowlers and fielders did well to bring us back,” he said.
“The guys are working hard to ge things right, and I believe we would give better performance in the remaining matches of the series.”
