Former Sri Lanka player Russell Arnold heaped praise on Rohit Sharma, saying the captain is leading from the front, and he doesn’t have to say much to the players as they follow his vision in the lead up to this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
Arnold said that India needed a different leader after their early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, and they have found the right man. The former Sri Lanka cricketer’s comments came after India defeated Sri Lanka by 62 runs in the first of a 3-match T20I series.
Rohit has been undefeated as a captain since taking over from Virat Kohli as India’s full-time white-ball captain. Following a 3-0 win over New Zealand at home, the Men in Blue thumped West Indies in ODIs and T20Is before hammering Sri Lanka in the opening game.
He scored a quickfire 32-ball 44 and shared an opening partnership of 111 runs with Ishan Kishan.
“India needed a different direction and they got it under Rohit Sharma. The expectations were behind their poor performance in the ICC T20 World Cup. Now that it’s over, the players are playing freely. The captain is leading from the front. He scored his runs at a strike rate of 140-150, which is exceptional.” Arnold told Star Sports.
“If someone is so good, he doesn’t have to say much to the players as they follow his vision. The depth in the batting order will make Rohit’s life easier,” he added.
