Former captain Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t understand that all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was not given a single over to bowl by skipper KL Rahul during the first ODI against South Africa in Paarl on Wednesday. Iyer was not given the ball despite India’s bowlers failing to perform well.

Venkatesh was preferred over Suryakumar Yadav but played only as a batter. Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar slammed KL Rahul for not giving the all-rounder one over.

“Only the captain has the answer. The opposition doesn’t know about him and should have bowled a couple of overs,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

“He could have broken the partnership, but he was not used. Something similar happened with Shivam Dube. He didn’t get the encouragement he deserved,” he added.

Shikhar Dhawan revealed that Iyer didn’t bowl because the spinners were impressive in the game. However, the numbers show a different story. Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin combined to pick just 1 wicket for 106 runs.
