Virat Kohli said his team was feeling “scoreboard pressure” after their first-innings failings — dismissed for 78 inside two sessions on Day 1.

“You’re always up against it when you get out for 78 in the first innings and England then put a big score up there,” he said. “We fought back well yesterday and gave ourselves the chance to do so again today. But England’s bowling was outstanding today and the pressure told.”

Kohli had no regrets about opting to bat first, saying the pitch had looked “really good” to bat on.

“If you have an innings like that you don’t dwell on it. We did much better in the second innings and we have positives to take out of this,” he said.

“But overall we were not on the money in this game and England were,” he added. “You expect them to bounce back and they did. We have bounced back well in the past. We will take a lot of pride in trying to correct our errors and execute our plans at the Oval.”
