He was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 but returned to competitive cricket in 2012. However, he lost his consistency and the explosive nature of his batting.
Yuvraj Singh has once again spoken about his retirement from cricket. The veteran bid adieu to the sport in June 2019 after representing India across formats in international cricket. He mentioned that there was a feeling of being disrespected and not getting support, which ultimately ended his desire to keep playing cricket. Yuvraj announced his retirement after being left out of India’s squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup. He was not a part of the team since 2017, and he said the final call was driven after being overlooked by the selection panel and less chances.
Speaking to former tennis player Sania Mirza, Yuvraj admitted that his joy to play cricket evaporated.
“I was not enjoying cricket, and there was no point in carrying on when you don’t enjoy the sport. I was not getting support, and even the respect was not there,” Yuvraj said. “Why do I need to play cricket when I don’t have this? Why am I holding on to something that I am not enjoying? It was hurting me as I was not ready to carry on mentally and physically. When I stopped, I was back to normal,” he added.

A sense of dissatisfaction hit the legendary all-rounder, and he started questioning the logic behind playing at the highest level.
Yuvraj was a match-winner in white-ball formats and was India’s best player in the team’s triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup. He was named the Player of the Tournament after India won the global tournament at the Wankhede Stadium.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 but returned to competitive cricket in 2012. However, he lost his consistency and the explosive nature of his batting. By the time the 2019 World Cup came, Yuvraj was not among the performers, and the selectors decided to move on from him.
Yuvraj also reflected on the time when people doubted his ability, and their remarks deeply hurt his father.
“I didn’t give importance to the statements, but father took it personally,” he added. He was one of the finest all-rounders to play for India.
