Gujarat Titans purchased 23 players in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The side had signed Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill ahead of the auction and bought players like Jason Roy, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami, and David Miller.
Titans’ head coach Ashish Nehra opened on his team’s composition and reviewed his side’s performance in the mega auction, insisting that they got players what they wanted and had to leg to some of the targets.
“Jason Roy and Lockie Ferguson were part of the plans. However, we couldn’t buy Liam Livingstone. ” Nehra told Cricbuzz. The Punjab Kings bought Livingstone for ₹11.50 crore.
“Look at a team like CSK; they lost bids for Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tripathi and the third against us,” Nehra further added.
Nehra further stated that it is difficult to predict tags for the players, citing the example of West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, who the Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased for ₹10.75 crore.
Replying to Simon Doull’s question on why the Gujarat Titans went late for wicketkeepers, Nehra said, “If you see other wicketkeepers like Nicholas Pooran, he has not scored runs, but look what kind of money he got. He got more money than Jonny Bairstow, Quinton de Kock.. so you have to choose from those options.”
“We got Matthew Wade and Indian wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who is one of the best local keepers.” Titans also bought the West Indies all-rounder Dominic Drakes ( ₹1.10 crore), and Nehra lauded the Windies player.
“He is good batter and can be a part of IPL for long. He has the talent and can be the X-factor,” said Nehra.
