The Karnataka government has permitted the Chinnaswamy Stadium to host international matches and the Indian Premier League. The decision was revealed on Saturday, January 17. The Karnataka State Cricket Association released a statement regarding the new development. The KSCA claimed that they been allowed to bring back cricket to the ground only after implementing specific terms and conditions ordered by the government.

The cricket body will take care of the safety, security and crowd management.

“We are pleased to inform you that the Home Department, Government of Karnataka, has granted permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to host international and IPL matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

“The permission is subject to compliance with specific terms and conditions prescribed by the Government and the concerned Authorities.

“KSCA is confident of fulfilling all the stipulated conditions. The Association has already presented a detailed compliance roadmap before the Expert Review Committee. It remains fully committed to implementing all safety, security, and crowd-management measures in letter and spirit,” read the statement from KSCA.

There was doubt about hosting the IPL 2026 matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium after the government declared it unfit for matches.

The iconic venue has not hosted matches since the stampede in June last year killed 11 people. Several fans were injured during the celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title win.

The BCCI shifted the Women’s ODI World Cup matches from Bengaluru to DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The Indian cricket board had allotted seven maches including the final, to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bengaluru was also removed from the list of the grounds set to host matches in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
