Ajinkya Rahane will find it difficult to make it to the Playing XI in South Africa, according to Gautam Gambhir. The 33-year old has scored 8 Test centuries and averages over 40 in away matches. However, his recent form has been poor in red-ball cricket. The right-handed batter has amassed just 411 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 19.57 this year.
He was recently replaced by Rohit Sharma as team’s vice-captain. When Gautam Gambhir was asked about Rahane’s future, he was not sure of his inclusion in the Playing XI , especially when team has in-form Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari.
“Tough, that is what I can say because he is not a starter, to be honest. I feel Ajinkya Rahane will find it difficult to get a place in the playing XI,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
“You have got Shreyas Iyer; it will be very difficult for India or the captain to drop him because of his recent performances. At the same time, Hanuma Vihari has done really well as well.”
