Virat and Rohit are only active in the fifty-over format, and the two are targeting the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. However, Gambhir and the selectors have refused to confirm their places.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has hinted that he didn’t handle his bond with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli well. The two legends retired from Test cricket after India failed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
Speaking at the Revsportz Conclave in Kolkata, Gambhir was asked about his relationship with Kohli and Rohit.
Gambhir didn’t give a direct answer but admitted that he may have made a few mistakes. However, the coach defended himself, saying that he is allowed to make mistakes if the intentions were right.
“I should be allowed to make mistakes as I am also a human. Even players can make mistakes. I have been on the wrong side in the last 18th months, and I don’t shy away from admitting it. The wrong decisions with the right intent are always acceptable. However, if you make a wrong decision because of wrong intentions, it is not acceptable in the dressing room,” Gambhir said.
“If I am honest, I can look into the eyes of players, and I think I have done a fair job as a coach,” he added.
After India’s defeat against New Zealand and Australia in Test cricket, the BCCI pulled up Gambhir and then skipper Rohit during a review meeting.
The decision-makers issued new guidelines to arrest the downfall. Soon after, Virat and Rohit decided to hang up their boots in the longest format of the game. The selectors and the management have given chances to young players, but the results haven’t been satisfactory. India were also thumped by South Africa at home, putting more pressure on Gambhir.
