Gambhir's remarks unsettled the BCCI, especially as India's batting struggled on both the Kolkata and Guwahati pitches, questioning the team’s adaptability and preparation strategy.
The BCCI has expressed dissatisfaction with India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s candid comments about the Kolkata pitch following the team’s recent Test defeat to South Africa. While no immediate action is being taken, sources indicate that Gambhir is likely to remain in his role for now due to a lack of alternatives. However, his position may be reconsidered later in the year, particularly if India struggles in the T20 World Cup on home soil.
The board’s frustration stems from Gambhir’s public support of the black-soil pitch at Eden Gardens, which drew criticism after India’s collapse on a turning track that exposed significant technical flaws. India lost by 30 runs, bowled out for just 93 in the fourth innings. This defeat added to the series of disappointing home Test performances, with India losing three consecutive home series.Gambhir, however, defended the pitch, stating that it performed exactly as the team had asked for.
“This is the exact pitch we asked for. The curator was extremely helpful and supportive. We got exactly what we wanted. When you don’t perform well, this is what happens,” he said following the defeat in Kolkata.
“Yes, it may not be a pitch that allows for flamboyant big shots, but if you’re willing to focus and play solid cricket, it’s definitely a surface where runs can be scored. There were no major issues with the wicket; it wasn’t unplayable. It was a wicket that tested your technique, mental toughness, and, most importantly, your temperament. The key is knowing how to handle spin, and this is exactly what we asked for and received.”

A comprehensive review of India’s Test struggles is anticipated, involving feedback from Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, but the BCCI is not expected to implement any immediate changes. The concept of split coaching is considered “unlikely,” and there are few viable alternatives for the head coach role.
“A thorough review will take place after the white-ball season,” a board official indicated that Gambhir’s tenure as coach may be influenced by India’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup. A poor showing on home soil could lead to renewed discussions about leadership for all formats.
