Agarkar also strongly advocated for Kishan’s selection despite his past inconsistencies, including skipping the 2023 South Africa tour, missing domestic cricket, and losing his central contract.
India clinched their third T20 World Cup title by defeating New Zealand in the final. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan played pivotal roles, with Samson earning the Player of the Tournament award after scoring three consecutive 80+ innings in the virtual quarter-final, semi-final, and final. However, their spots in the playing XI were not entirely secure, as Shubman Gill’s potential inclusion could have altered the lineup. The final squad composition reflected the contrasting views of head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Gill, who was India’s T20I vice-captain from the Asia Cup 2025, struggled to score in the shortest format. Gambhir reportedly favored including him in the squad, as reported by The Indian Express, but Agarkar disagreed. After thorough deliberation, the selectors ultimately removed Gill, choosing Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh instead.
“Your view might not be the same as mine, but we still believe he’s a top-quality player. Someone had to be left out, and it just happened to be him. Thankfully, Indian cricket has plenty of talent to choose from,” Agarkar told the team management during the selection meeting.
Shubman Gill’s presence in the squad could have pushed Samson to a lower batting position or even onto the bench. By excluding Gill, the team ensured Samson could play a leading role in India’s tournament-winning campaign.
Agarkar also strongly advocated for Kishan’s selection despite his past inconsistencies, including skipping the 2023 South Africa tour, missing domestic cricket, and losing his central contract. Kishan’s strong domestic performances, however, convinced the selectors to bring him back.
“He opens the batting in white-ball cricket and has been performing well. He has experience playing for India. The only reason he wasn’t included in the team was that Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel were ahead of him,” Agarkar explained.
On the leadership front, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup, a new captain was needed. While Hardik Pandya was a popular choice, it was Agarkar who pushed for Suryakumar Yadav, encouraging the panel to look beyond Pandya and back Yadav as India’s T20 captain.
“One of the key points we considered was having a captain who is expected to play in every match. We believe he is the right choice,” Ajit Agarkar had said when Suryakumar Yadav was named T20I captain.
