Tiwary emphasized Laxman’s solid record and believes he should be approached to take over as head coach.
Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has suggested that the BCCI should consider parting ways with head coach Gautam Gambhir if the Suryakumar Yadav-led team fails to clinch the T20 World Cup 2026 title. Gambhir’s coaching faced intense scrutiny following India’s loss in the ODI series against New Zealand. While his T20I coaching record has been commendable, India’s underwhelming results in Tests and ODIs have led to talks of a potential ‘split coaching’ model. In an interview with InsideSport, Tiwary pointed out that while the BCCI has promised to back Gambhir until his contract runs out, a poor showing in the T20 World Cup could see him lose his position.
“If Gautam Gambhir doesn’t lead India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, the BCCI will have to make a tough decision. The BCCI secretary has mentioned that Gambhir will continue until his contract ends. However, if the T20 World Cup 2026 doesn’t yield the desired results, I believe the BCCI will take a bold step and part ways with him,” he said.
In addition, Tiwary recommended VVS Laxman as a strong replacement for Gautam Gambhir if the BCCI decides to make a change. Laxman, who holds the position of Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has previously filled in as coach during Rahul Dravid’s absence. Tiwary emphasized Laxman’s solid record and believes he should be approached to take over as head coach.
“It needs to be a process-driven decision. When Rahul Dravid was the coach of India and couldn’t be part of a series, VVS Laxman was naturally the go-to choice. Laxman, in his role as head coach, has maintained a strong winning percentage. In my view, the BCCI should make an effort to convince him, as he’s not only a composed and level-headed individual but also a great person. Additionally, he has the necessary coaching experience,” he added.
