Yuvraj Singh recalled the darkest phase of his life during his battle with cancer after India won the 2011 World Cup at home. He was diagnosed with cancer after the tournament, where he was named the Player of the Tournament.

Yuvraj was expected to take his career to new heights after the World Cup success, but found himself fighting for survival. The cancer was not detected during the Men in Blue’s journey in the World Cup despite the southpaw battling fatigue, nausea and discomfort. Yuvraj revealed that he was told that he had a few months to live.

“I was told that I have three to six months to live. The tumour was between my lung and heart. Doctor said that I could suffer a heart attack if I don’t go for chemotherapy,” Yuvraj told Kevin Pietersen on The Switch.

Yuvraj mentioned that he was excited to play a Test series in Australia as he had just cemented his place in the team after a lot of struggles.

“I had just cemented my place in the Test team. I wanted to play but had no choice but to travel to the US for treatment,” he added.

Yuvraj was hopeful of his recovery after undergoing chemotherapy in the United States. “Dr Lawrence Einhorn told me that I would walk out as a man who was never diagnosed with cancer. His words gave me strength. When I recovered and was told that I could resume playing cricket, it was like getting a second life,” he mentioned.

Yuvraj played several match-winning knocks after returning to international cricket and even posted his highest ODI score. He managed 150 against England in Cuttack in 2017. He announced his retirement in 2019.
