Overview:
Sourav urged Virat and Rohit to play domestic cricket.
Sourav Ganguly has opined on Rohit Sharma’s removal from ODI captaincy and said it is not new, as it happened with players in the past. Rohit, who won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy as a skipper, was replaced by Shubman Gill as the new ODI skipper.
The 38-year-old has been included in the team as a specialist batter. Ganguly mentioned that Rohit’s age would have played a role in the decision.
“I am sure Rohit was informed about it. I am not sure if it was a sacking. It was a mutual decision. Rohit has been an outstanding leader as he won the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Performance is not the reason. He will be 40 by 2027, and that is a big number.”
“It happened to me and Dravid. It happens to everyone. Even Shubman Gil will face the same when he turns 40. Everyone has to end at some point in sports. It is not a bad decision to promote Gill, who has shown talent in England. It is a fair call. Rohit can continue playing,” he added.
Sourav urged Virat and Rohit to play domestic cricket. “They have to play domestic cricket otherwise they will lose touch. If you stop playing, you can’t get better. They have to practice and perform,” he concluded.
India will clash with Australia in the first ODI on October 19.
