England and Pakistan opener
England and Pakistan openers script a unique record

Day 3 of the first Test between England and Pakistan is underway at the Rawalpindi stadium. Pakistan emulated England’s performance in the first innings, and their openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq put up a double-hundred stand.

In the first hour of day 3, Abdullah and Imam brought up their hundreds and scripted a milestone for the first time in Test cricket’s history.

Abdullah scored 114 (203), and Imam got out after scoring 121 (107). With this feat, for the first time in cricket’s history, openers from both teams have scored a century in the first innings.

England’s Zak Crawley amassed 122(111), while Ben Duckett, who returned to the side after six years, scored 107(110).

The poor condition of the Rawalpindi pitch has played a big part in helping both teams register this record. The fans and experts have bashed the PCB and pitch curators for making possibly the worst playing pitch.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja also acknowledged the poor flat pitch and said, “We live in dark ages of pitches in Pakistan. It is embarrassing for us.”

Pakistan are 298/3 after lunch in the first innings and are trailing by 359 runs. The match is likely to head toward a draw that will hamper Pakistan and England’s chances to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
