While Ravindra Jadeja was the top performer for India in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali, R Ashwin also achieved another record in his career.
The off-spinner surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev’s 434 Test scalps to become India’s second most successful bowler in red-ball cricket.
Kapil took 131 Tests to reach the milestone, while Ashwin went past the World Cup-winning skipper in just 85 games. Anil Kumble tops the list with 619 scalps in 132 Test matches.
The 35-year old took six wickets in the match and also stitched a century stand with Jadeja in the first innings, which helped the hosts score 574 for eight. Ashwin scored 61 with his willow.
Veteran India batter Dinesh Karthik heaped praise on his teammate, putting Ashwin on the list of greatest players to have played the game.
Ashwin has entered the list of the world’s top 10 wicket-takers led by Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and late Australia great Shane Warne (708).
“Ashwin has been a top performer. Look at the speed he has taken his wickets. He has taken wickets against all the teams. For me, he is the complete all-rounder and one of the greatest sportsmen to have played the sport.
“He has got runs when it mattered the most. He scored a hundred against England on a challenging wicket. The left-handers find him tough to face,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.
“Ashwin is not the fastest man on the field, but he is bowling fit. He does not get tired easily. If you ask him to bowl 30 overs, you will see the ball turning in 25-28 overs,” he further added.
Captain Rohit Sharma also hailed Ashwin for his exceptional bowling display. “He is getting batter day by day,” said Rohit.
