Shubman Gill could not have imagined a more ideal start to his captaincy, especially with his outstanding batting displays. After scoring a century in his first Test as captain in Leeds, he followed it up with a performance that could define a career. He scored 269 runs in the first innings and 161 in the second at Edgbaston. His match-winning efforts earned him the Player of the Match award and helped India level the series against England.

Gill’s performance was commanding and assured that it reminded Dinesh Karthik of Virat Kohli.

Speaking on Sky Cricket’s podcast, Karthik remarked that he saw traits of Virat Kohli in Gill’s leadership style. He was talking to Michael Atherton.

“Athers, you mentioned Virat Kohli. I met him recently, and we spoke about captaincy. He mentioned that while people recognise him as a great Test cricketer and enjoy his batting, the truth is that becoming captain was the best thing that ever happened to him. The interesting part is that Shubman Gill said the same thing,” Dinesh Karthik said.

Kohli, widely regarded as one of India’s greatest Test captains, thrived under pressure. If Gill’s early days are taken into consideration, he is likely to take a similar path. Karthik suggested that international cricket should be prepared for the emergence of another great Indian player.

“Shubman Gill said that I used to bat in my own way, but now, with the captaincy, I feel like it’s more about what the team needs, rather than focusing on my individual batting.’ I thought, wow, this is something the entire cricketing world should pay attention to.” Karthik added.

“Here’s a player who has the desire, the skill, and the technique, but now he also has the right mindset. As captain, he’s determined to lead from the front, taking charge with confidence,” Karthik concluded.

Even though Gill’s debut as a captain started with a 5-wicket defeat in the first Test, he bounced back in style in the second game. The focus now shifts to the Lord’s Test, where Gill will be eager to continue building on India’s cricketing legacy.
