Rohit Sharma has hardly played international cricket since becoming India’s permanent skipper across formats. He has been rested every now and then, which impacted the team in the Asia Cup and the ICC T20 World Cup.
The 35-year-old has been out of ODIs and has led India in just 6. Shikhar Dhawan has been filling in for him. Rohit has been India’s captain in two ODI series while he missed five. The ODI World Cup will be played in 2023, and Rohit’s absence has been questioned by many.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra shared his thoughts on the Indian captain’s absence from the scene.
“Pat Cummins, Jos Buttler and Dasun Shanaka are leading their respective teams but where is Rohit Sharma? It is a valid question because why do we change our captains so much?” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami have also taken regular breaks from international cricket. Chopra said it hurts the team’s continuity and doesn’t allow players to settle.
“The captain and coach build a team. They should be present with the players all the time. You have a new captain leading in New Zealand and you will have another one in Bangladesh. The openers will change. So where is your core group? These are not good signs,” he added.
