In two days, India and Australia will lock horns for the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with Nagpur set to host the game from February 9-13. Ahead of the series opener Australia dealt a heavy blow as their star all-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out for the first game.
The 23-year-old, whom Mumbai Indians bought for a whopping 17.5 crores in the latest IPL auction, fractured his finger during the boxing day Test match against South Africa in December. Following the injury, Green came to bat and struck a half-century, but the post-match scans showed a fracture, which put his participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at risk.
After days of speculations about whether Green will play the first Test, it is now confirmed that the 23-year-old will have to sit out for the series opener and will return for the second game.
Australia are already without Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood due to injuries, and now Green’s unavailability is a big setback for the Pat Cummins-led side, who are looking to win their first away tour to India since 2004.
On the contrary, Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the majority of 2022 due to injury, returns to the team, but the Rohit Sharma-led side will miss Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah.
