South Africa lost three wickets after making a steady start and was 105 for three at lunch on the first day of the first cricket test against India on Friday.
Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton had put on 57 runs for the first wicket before Jasprit Bumrah brought India back into the game with two quick breakthroughs.
South Africa had earlier won the toss and opted to bat in the first test of the two-match series. At lunch, Wiaan Mulder was batting on 22 runs off 43 balls, while Tony de Zorzi was unbeaten on 15 runs.
Bumrah finally broke through in the 10th over, sending Ryan Rickelton’s off stump flying with a precision delivery. He struck again right away, producing a sharp short ball that climbed on Aiden Markram, forcing an edge through to the keeper.Kuldeep Yadav then chipped in by removing Temba Bavuma, turning South Africa’s strong start of 57 without loss into a sudden slump at 71 for 3.Bumrah’s double strike, combined with Kuldeep’s breakthrough, put India firmly on top as the session.
Earlier in the game, South Africa won their first toss in India across eight Tests since 2015, their previous success coming at Eden Gardens back in 2010.
Shubman Gill joked at the toss that “the only toss I might actually win this year is probably the WTC final.” He added that the pitch looked in good shape and hoped India could extract some early movement with the new ball. Gill confirmed two changes as well, with Rishabh Pant coming in for Reddy and Axar Patel returning to the XI.
