Overview:

Any move could trigger ICC sanctions, affecting bilateral cricket, NOCs for overseas players in PSL, and Asia Cup participation.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had kept multiple options on the table as it awaits approval from the government, including the possibility of boycotting the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 or withdrawing from the group-stage match against India in support of Bangladesh. A complete withdrawal would almost certainly draw strict ICC measures, while opting out of the India fixture could leave the PCB facing a legal claim of around 38 million-dollar from the broadcasters.

Pakistan media reported on Monday that the PCB is exploring several measures, including skipping the India clash, wearing black armbands, and attributing every win to Bangladesh cricket fans.

As per RevSportz report, Pakistan’s options are limited, as pulling out of the World Cup or avoiding the India game is not feasible. Any move could trigger ICC sanctions, affecting bilateral cricket, NOCs for overseas players in PSL, and Asia Cup participation.

Skipping the high-profile Group A meeting with India could also prompt broadcasters to seek compensation from the PCB. “From a broadcaster’s perspective, close to 38 million dollars is tied directly to that fixture through advertising inventory, sponsored programming and brand partnerships,” the report said, drawing attention to the financial and legal implications of any withdrawal.

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday to deliberate on all available options. A conclusive decision regarding Pakistan’s participation is expected to be made public on Friday or Monday.

“Held a constructive meeting with Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz (Shehbaz) Sharif. I updated him on the ICC issue, and he advised that it be addressed with all options kept open. It was mutually agreed that a final call will be made either on Friday or next Monday,” Naqvi wrote on social media.
