Chennai Super Kings, the defending champions, have suffered a major blow ahead of IPL 2022, as MS Dhoni’s favourite bowler Deepak Chahar is set to miss a major chunk of the tournament.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Chahar, who suffered a quadricep tear in the third T20I against West Indies, is likely to take several weeks to heal, meaning he will be out of a lot of games.
The Super Kings are awaiting a final report from the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where the pacer is undergoing rehabilitation.
Chahar, 29, was CSK’s most expensive buy (INR 14 crore) at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were engaged in a bidding for the all-rounder. However, Chennai’s highest bid was not matched by any rival franchise and they got their prime target.
Chahar was first bought by Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 at his base price of INR 10 lakh. In the 2018 mega auction, the Super Kings bought him for INR 80 lakhs. It proved to be a smart buy as Deepak took 58 wickets in 58 matches for them.
The four-time champions are having their pre-season camp in Surat. The conditions are similar to Mumbai and Pune, where the league phase will be played. The Super Kings captain MS Dhoni along with the support staff including assistant coach Laxmipathy Balaji are in Surat.
Super Kings are likely to leave for Mumbai by road on March 20.
