Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s release from the squad of the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2026 has impacted the relations between the two countries. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed KKR to part ways with the pacer, leaving the Bangladesh government and the cricket board angry. The BCB wants its team’s matches in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to be shifted from India to Sri Lanka. According to a report, the decision to remove Mustafizur from the league wasn’t discussed among the BCCI officials and the members of the IPL Governing Council.
Not all the members were present in the meeting when the board decided to release Mustafizur from the IPL. The report claimed that the decision was taken at the highest level of the board.
Mustafizur was bought for INR 9.20 crore in the auction last month. “We came to know about the decision through the media. There was no discussion and no suggestion was taken from us,” the Indian Express quoted a BCCI official as saying.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced the big decision. “Due to the recent developments, the BCCI has told the KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh,” he said.
In reply, Bangladesh has banned OPL telecast in the country. “The telecast and promotion of the IPL has been stopped in Bangladesh,” the Bangladesh ministry said in a statement.
A Hindu man was lynched in Bangladesh, leading to tensions between India and Bangladesh. Some of the other members of the minority community have been attacked in Bangladesh. KKR and their co-owner Shah Rukh Khan were facing massive flak on social media for signing the Bangladesh player.
