India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the ongoing first Test against South Africa due to a neck spasm. He was taken to a hospital and kept in the ICU. While his condition has improved, he is likely to stay in the hospital. The BCCI has made him unavailable for the remaining part of the match. A 6-member panel has been formed to monitor Gill’s recovery as he looks to return for the second Test in Guwahati.

“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” the BCCI said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Gill retired hurt after playing a slog sweep in Simon Harmer’s delivery in the first session of the second day. He faced three balls before leaving the field. The right-handed batter hit Harmer for a boundary in the square leg region but immediately clutched his neck.

The physio attended to him, but the batter was unable to carry on and walked off. The incident happened in the 35th over.

Gill’s exit put India under pressure, and the Proteas took advantage of the situation. The hosts were dismissed for 189 runs while South Africa managed 93 for 7 at stumps on Day 2.

For South Africa, Simon Harmer took 4 wickets, and Marco Jansen added three scalps to his bowling figures. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja dismissed four batters in the Proteas’ second innings.

India won the previous Test series 2-0 against the West Indies. South Africa drew the two-Test match series 1-1 against Pakistan.
