Australia didn’t miss Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, courtesy of Mitchell Starc. The left-arm speedster got rid of England’s top order in the first Test of the Ashes 2025-26. He dismissed the top three batters, with Zak Crawley and Joe Root registering ducks. Ben Duckett hit four boundaries, but Starc got rid of him to put the hosts in the driving seat.

Starc completed his 100 wickets in the Ashes with the dismissal of Root, who was caught by Marnus Labuschagne after facing 7 deliveries.

In 23 Ashes Tests, Starc reached the century of wickets at an average of 26.65. He is the 21st bowler to reach the 100-wicket mark in the most iconic rivalry in cricket. He is the first left-arm pacer to complete 100 wickets in Ashes history. No other left-arm fast bowler has even amassed 90 Ashes wickets, with Mitchell Johnson following Starc with 87 scalps.

Shane Warne leads the list with 195 wickets in 36 Tests at an average of 23.25. He is followed by Glenn McGrath (157), Stuart Broad (153), Hugh Trumble (141) and Dennis Lillee (128).

Starc was spot on from the first ball of the match and clocked 140 kmph-plus despite being a 35-year-old. The most important wicket came in the form of Root, who came to Australia after scoring three hundreds in the previous Test series against India.

He is the No.1 batter in the world and the second-highest run-getter in the longest format of the game.

Root hasn’t scored a hundred in Australia so far, and he will be under pressure in the upcoming innings.
