Sunil Gavaskar said Ruturaj Gaikwad should be Chennai Super Kings’ captain in the future as he is sure to be a part of the Playing XI.
IPL 2023 could be MS Dhoni’s last season with the four-time champions. The Chennai-based team would be looking to groom a future skipper after failing with Ravindra Jadeja in the previous season.
“He has captained Maharashtra in domestic cricket and knows about captaincy. Ruturaj is certain in the playing XI, and you want someone as your captain who regularly plays for the team,” he said on Star Sports.
Gavaskar said Gaikwad’s game might move to the next level if he is made skipper, just like Rohit Sharma of Mumbai Indians.
“Rohit Sharma started playing match-winning knocks after becoming Mumbai Indians’ captain. I think Ruturaj Gaikwad could follow the same path.”
In 36 matches for CSK, he has scored 1207 runs at an excellent average of 37.71.
