Australian wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey had a memorable Test debut in the ongoing Ashes. He became the first player in cricket history to take eight catches in the maiden red-ball game. The 30-year old went past England’s Chris Read, Australia’s Brian Taber, and India’s Rishabh Pant, who took seven catches each in their debut Test matches. Even the greats like MS Dhoni, Adam Gilchrist, and Mark Boucher couldn’t achieve this feat in their careers.
Notably, Quinton de Kock had registered nine dismissals in his first Test for South Africa as a wicket-keeper but had already represented the national team without keeping the wickets.
Australia defeated England by nine wickets in the opening fixture. Resuming the fourth day on 220/2, England lost eight wickets in 77 runs, setting a 20-run target for the hosts.
