Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has called Ajinkya Rahane lucky for being a part of the team for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand.

Gambhir further added that Rahane, despite his poor performance in England, has retained his place only because he has to lead in Virat Kohli’s absence.

Virat has been rested and will the first Test in Kanpur. While reports had suggested that Rohit Sharma might captain the team in Test matches, it was later confirmed that he has asked for a break after the T20Is.

“I will open with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, and then probably Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4,” he said.

“Ajinkya Rahene is lucky to be part of this team. He has got another opportunity now. Hopefully, he can perform,” he added.

Ajinkya Rahane has scored 644 runs in the last 15 Test matches, and both spinners and fast bowlers have troubled him.
