The ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle has announced that he will feature only in the 6ixty tournament and skip the Caribbean Premier League.

The news comes days after Chris Gayle was announced as the brand ambassador of the new 6ixty tournament.

The 60-ball tournament will run for five days from 24th August to 28th August in St. Kitts, leading up to the CPL that will begin on 30th August.

The tournament will feature the same six men’s franchises in the CPL and three women’s franchises. Both sets of matches are scheduled to run simultaneously.

The 42-year-old, the 2nd highest run-scorer in the history of CPL, expressed his excitement to play in the shorter format. Notably, Gayle won the CPL title with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots last year and had contributed 165 runs in nine innings.

In a media statement, he said, “I am going for the shorter format this year. I am genuinely excited about the current innovations in the 6ixty and seeing how they play out. In particular, I am looking forward to the mystery team ball and hitting two sixes in the first 12 balls to unlock the third powerplay over.”

The power-hitter also shared a post on social media announcing the trophy to be called the ‘Universe Boss Trophy.’

Most West Indies players are expected to be available for a 6ixty-tournament after the series against New Zealand. Some overseas players are also expected to participate in the tournament.
